Local oncologist receives international achievement award for outstanding contributions to cancer care
Dr. Robin Zon has been recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology for her work in research, clinical care and advocacy.
MISHAWAKA, Indiana (April 27, 2020) – Dr. Robin Zon, MD, FACP, FASCO, medical oncologist at Michiana Hematology Oncology, PC, has been honored with the Distinguished Achievement Award by American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Dr. Zon was honored for her significant contributions to research, clinical care, and advocacy on behalf of patients living with cancer and their cancer care teams worldwide.
Researchers, patient advocates, and global oncology leaders who transform cancer care are among the recipients of the ASCO Special Awards—the Society’s highest honors.
The first woman to receive the award, Dr. Zon is also the first community oncologist, and the tenth person to receive the award. In addition to these firsts, Dr. Zon also served as the first female to lead ASCO’s Government Relations Committee in 2017.
Dr. Zon has been recognized for her many achievements. Dr Zon was integral in establishing exemplary standards for Clinical Research Sites which continues to serve as the platform for The National Cancer Institute (NCI) and ASCO. These established standards support the evaluation and development of quality research programs. Additionally, Dr. Zon led the development of the Clinical Oncology Pathway criteria which evolved current industry standards. Dr. Zon frequently meets with local and federal elected officials to promote cancer care policies that benefit all cancer patients and their providers. She works with lawmakers in both Indiana and Michigan. Dr Zon has been called upon by the Institute of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute, and the federal government to offer guidance and share her expertise.
Dr. Zon has served as President of Michiana Hematology Oncology, PC, and continues to practice full time as a medical oncologist. Dr. Zon formerly served as Principal Investigator for the Northern Indiana Cancer Research Consortium (NICRC), the only NCI designated community program (CCOP) in Indiana. Dr. Zon earned her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, completed her residency at St. Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center in Indianapolis, a fellowship in medical oncology and hematology at Indiana University Cancer Center and Business Administration at the University of Notre Dame.
