Michiana Hematology Oncology announced today they are one of the first oncology practices in the country to partner with RainTree Oncology Services, the only organization focused exclusively on providing oral therapeutics. The partnership will enable oncologists at the Advanced Centers for Cancer Care to provide more oral treatment options for patients battling cancer than anywhere else in the region.

“Oral medications are becoming more and more important in the fight against cancer,” said Rafat Ansari, MD, FACP, President of the Advanced Centers for Cancer Care. “Unfortunately, they are often expensive for patients and inconvenient to get because some can only be dispensed through specialty pharmacies. By partnering with oncology practices around the country, RainTree is able to work with major pharmaceutical companies to provide these medications directly to oncology practices. Through our partnership with RainTree, we’ll be able to set up our own oncology pharmacy to make these new treatments more affordable and immediately available for patients.”

An on-site pharmacy also will mean better patient-monitoring for physicians, according to Michelle Moore, R.Ph., Oncology Clinical Pharmacist for the Advanced Centers for Cancer Care. “By being able to fill prescriptions on-site, we can make sure patients receive their medication promptly. If there are any insurance problems, we’re right there to help. And as a pharmacy that specializes in oncology treatments, we’ll be able to answer questions and provide in-depth education about each patient’s particular medication.”

The Advanced Centers for Cancer Care are among the first ten oncology practices in the United States to adopt RainTree Oncology Services’ new model for oral therapeutics distribution. “We’re making this change because we know that over time oral treatment options will play a major role in the fight against cancer,” said Dr. Ansari. “We want patients to have access to these breakthrough treatments right away. Partnering with RainTree is just one of the ways we’re preparing for the future of cancer care.”

Dr. Ansari is available for media comment about the Advanced Centers for Cancer Care’s partnership with RainTree Oncology Services, how the new RainTree model works, and what this means for patients battling cancer in northern Indiana.
